I sat at the Muni stop, a few blocks from Ocean beach. Just me and an elderly Chinese lady. Strangers sitting, waiting. Sounds of traffic, a cool breeze funnelling straight up Judah that gave relief from the heat.
As the train approached I turned and our gaze met. A pair of the most beautiful brown sparkling eyes directed me to look downwards. I saw that she had her shoes on the wrong feet. When our eyes met again we both erupted in laughter. The train arrived, she was seated behind me.
I simply could not stop smiling. It bubbled up and spilled out in a chuckle every so often.
A few stops later I felt fingers gently tap me on the shoulder. She wanted to say goodbye.. She smiled and waved before getting off. Not one word spoken. My heart full to bursting. Nothing happened. This is nothing appearing to happen.
There are no small events, no big events- no events at all. Just the inescapable, unknowable song of nothing appearing as everything. Love unconditional.
I grew up on Galway Bay and the view of the hills in the Burren Co. Clare is more than familiar to me. Yet, as familiar as it is I have always sensed that it is always new. The time of the year and the quality of the light undress it in infinitely new and mesmerising ways. There was a storm yesterday and the dance of light was stunning as clouds would clear suddenly after a heavy downpour illuminating the landscape or the cup of tea nestled in your hand.
